Senior Engineering Project : Date Processing
Date farming is the center of industry and livelihood for many communities in the Sahara Desert. This project will assist in the design of a date processing plant that manufactures date powder. This date processing plant will add economic and social value to those communities dependent on date production. Most dates are grown and produced to be sold whole. However, dates have many more potential uses. The majority of the current market for dates does not have a use for defective dates. An entrepreneur in North Africa seeks to meet a need in the date industry by using whole and defective dates to produce date powder, a sugar substitute. The focus of our project is to create an overall layout and process design for the processing plant and design a dryer that utilizes natural solar energy to quickly dry many dates.
Our team has the unique opportunity to travel to North Africa to experience first-hand the impact our project will have on both the date industry and the surrounding community. The insight we will gain into the project design and implementation process from the opportunity to collaborate in person is invaluable.
