Dordt University Wind Symphony Album Project
The Dordt University Wind Symphony Presents: Music Among Friends!
You can be part of the team that enables creation of the first full length professional recording of the Dordt University Wind Symphony on a major recording label!
For decades the best wind bands in the nation and abroad have been highlighted by the exceptional recordings they produce. Universities regularly pursue recording projects as a way to highlight their institution and the great opportunities that reside within. Currently, the Dordt University Wind Symphony (previously the Concert Band) has never recorded a professional level CD that can be accessed by persons beyond the Dordt community. This recording project places the Dordt University Department of Music on the same level as many of our nation’s most highly regarded schools of music. In addition, this project will provide yet another opportunity to bring a reformed Christian prospective, and Christian education before the eyes of the world.
Producing a recording on a major record label is no small task. First, the ensemble must be regarded as worthy of producing a recording. Next they must find a record label that can produce the recording at the most professional and highly regarded level. Mark Custom Recording is just that label. In its years of recording, Mark Recording has had the honor of working with such musical icons as the Goo Goo Dolls, Rick James, Spyro Gyra, Roy Clark, Dizzy Gillespie, Dr. Billy Taylor, John Faddis, Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Marcel, Winton, and Brandon Marsalis, 10,000 Maniacs, Richie Havens, Ginger Baker, Denny Laine The Misfits, Amherst Saxophone Quartet, Kurt Vonequet, Geoffrey Guiliano, Chicago Symphony, Houston Opera, Baltimore Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, The United States Air Force Band, "The Presidents Own" United States Marine Band, The United States Navy Band, "Pershings Own" United States Army Band, United States Coast Guard Band and countless others. Mark Recording has been showered with awards and honors in our history. This includes 60 Grammy Entry List appearances including Best Classical Recording, Best Classical Album, and Best Classical Performance. And 2 Grammy Nominations in the Jazz field with the Ashley Alexander Big Band and the Eastman Jazz Ensemble. They have received numerous awards for Downbeat Magazine’s outstanding Jazz Recordings.
Now Mark Custom will bring their expertise and recording prowess to Dordt University as they record and produce this landmark album.
The album title Music Among Friends first stems from the fellowship and friendly atmosphere that music creates. Within any ensemble the members join together in musical fellowship to create art. The members of the DUWS will join together in musical fellowship to create this landmark recording.
Second, Music Among Friends is just that…the sharing of the music of composers that have a friendship with Dordt University through their connection with the DUWS conductor, Dr. Onsby Rose. The list of composers to be represented on this album is some of the most highly regarded composers of wind band music in the world. People like David Maslanka and Peter Meechan have been in residence and performed by the world’s most prominent wind ensembles. In addition, there are many emerging composers in the quickly expanding and artistly prominent wind band profession. Composers like Montana native Tyler Harrison, Australian composer Peter Ratnik, and Dordt University’s own, Onsby Rose (Director of Instrumental Studies). Finally, the album will also represent the diverse nature of the wind band music and the effort to provide performances of minority composers by recording one of the most recognizable female composers currently writing, Dr. Nicole Piunno.
The DUWS will undergo recording sessions from April 30 – May 3, 2020 in the B.J. Haan Auditorium with Mark Custom. During this time they will record all selections (listed below) for the album. During June 2020 Dr. Rose will go to New York to edit and master the CD alongside Mark J. Morrette of Mark Custom. Following the editing session the CD art will be prepared and an official release party will be help on campus at Dordt University. All supporters will be invited to attend.
