DU Wind Symphony Album Update

July 13, 2020

Dear Dordt Wind Symphony CD Donors,

Hello!  I hope this email finds you well and healthy this summer. I must first apologize for not reaching out sooner. As we all know it has been an unprecedented academic year and summer with respect to all things that have been affected by the current COVID-19 pandemic and I did not want to make an update until I knew what our plans would entail.

In March, Dordt went fully online, as did the vast majority of colleges around the nation. As you might imagine, this created a huge challenge for music and the performing arts. There is really no way to achieve the objectives of a large ensemble over the internet. Because of this, the Wind Symphony CD recording project had to be postponed.

This update is to give you a brief idea of our plans moving forward.  We still fully plan to record this album. We have now scheduled the recording sessions to take place during the final 4 days of spring break in March 2021. The WS is scheduled to tour this year, however we still do not know exactly where that tour will take us. Once we begin to traverse the fall semester, this will give us an idea of what we can do for tour in the spring with consideration of the health requirements of COVID-19, our students, and our host families.  However, regardless of where we go for tour, we will be still recording the album at the end of spring break in March. All rewards for your donation will be followed through at that time, and I will be in touch as we approach the late fall, to schedule the various events that encompasses. Currently, I am planning for the CD to include most of the music that was originally planned. However, for educational reasons I will have to adjust a couple of the works (mainly because it would not be educationally sound to have the ensemble prepare and perform the works that were on our March 2020 concert, again). I will also send an email update and post to the crowdfunding page any adjustments to music selection that have to be made. All of the composers that were originally intended to be represented on the album, will still be represented, it may just require that we record a different work from their catalog of music.

Once again, thank you for your donations and support of not only this project, but also for your continued support and prayers for Dordt University, and the DU music department.

I pray each of you will have a great remainder of your summer, and I look forward to updating you as we get this project back up and going!

Blessings from Iowa,

Dr. Onsby Rose

We're Nearly Halfway

December 03, 2019

Hello!  We hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving Holiday!  It has been a great time for our students to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the semester, and recharge to push through the final two weeks to Christmas Break!

The Dordt Wind Symphony Album fundraiser is pushing forward as well!  We have received all of the music for the album, and it will be going home with our student musicians over the holidays!  We are also very excited to announce the addition of Dordt Alum Jonathan Posthuma to our list of composers that will be represented on the CD!  Jonathan will have his work “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need” performed and recorded on this album!  We are so excited to showcase the talent of this wonderful alumnus of Dordt on this album.

Currently we are pushing toward the halfway mark on our fundraising. If you have friends, family, or community members that are supporters of Dordt, music, or art, please share the crowdfunding link with them:

They can join us for any amount and every dollar helps!

As the semester has proceeded, the Dordt Wind Symphony has had some great opportunities.  Just before the holiday break, the group traveled to South Dakota to collaborate with the Univ. of South Dakota Bands on a concert.  You can view/hear the DU Wind Symphony portion of the concert here:

Thank you each for your support! Our prayers are for many blessings for your generosity and support. We look forward to moving forward with this exciting project because of your help!

An Update

November 21, 2019

Dear Friends,

With 54 days remaining we are 24% into our goal of $18,000 to support this wonderful project!  Thank you to all who have donated to the campaign! The musicians of the Dordt University Wind Symphony are hard at work preparing for two final performances for the fall semester. First, on Nov. 21 we will travel to the University of South Dakota for a shared concert with the bands of USD! Closing that concert will be a joint performance by the Dordt Wind Symphony and the USD Symphonic Band of an American favorite, “America the Beautiful” by Samuel Augustus Ward! What better way to fellowship with our friends to the west, than to join together to celebrate the beauty of this great nation with one of our iconic patriotic selections. You can get a sneak peak of this by viewing our final rehearsal on the work by the DUWS at this link:

One of the many questions that is regularly asked about our upcoming recording is, “How is the $18,000 going to be spent?”  I think donors have a right to know where their money is going. So, in this update I would like to share with you the budget for this recording.  Below you will see an itemized list of where all of the funds will be allocated.

4 Days of Recording Sessions in the B.J. Haan with world renowned and Grammy Nominated recording engineer and producer Mark J. Morrette and Mark Custom Recording: $3000.00

3 Days of Editing over 12 hours of recording takes by Mark Custom: $1350.00

2000 Hard Copy CDs: $7500.00

250 Album Download Cards: $750.00

Artwork for CD Insert (Provided by Dordt U.) - $100.00

Mechanical Licensing Fees for 9 works - $225.00

Enhanced Digital CD Booklet - $200.00

Copyright Fees - $2976.75

Lodging for Mark Custom during recording - $400

Round Trip Airfare for Mark Custom travel to Sioux Center - $700.00

Round Trip Airfare for Dr. Rose to New York for editing sessions - $700.00

Lodging in New York for editing sessions - $400.00

Total cost: $18,301.75

As you can see from the above, the cost of a professionally recorded, edited and mastered album is hefty. However, the return on investment is huge! Dordt University will be heard around the world on 250+ streaming platforms available in almost every country on earth! The great things God is doing through Christian Education will be brought to the forefront, and Dordt will be God’s avenue to tell the world the good news of our Savior, and what He is doing through our beloved University! Thank you for your donations! Please share this opportunity with those that you know that are supporters of Christian Education, music, art and Dordt University! We are so thankful for your support!
